There are many things to love about North Sands in Salcombe which proves a popular destination for both young and old time and time again. The magic combination we think is due to a spectacular location and beach, parking facilities and the ever popular Winking Prawn cafe and restaurant.
North Sands beach has water running down the centre of it (being at the bottom of a valley) which is ideal for making dams. When the tide is out, the sea reveals a wonderful sweeping sandy beach perfect for beach games and building sandcastles.
To the left of the beach are the remains of Fort Charles which was originally constructed during the reign of Henry VIII to defend the estuary against French and Spanish pirates.
The Winking Prawn at the back of the beach is a Salcombe institution in its own right! It is a shack-like sixties-style cafe/restaurant with a buzzing atmosphere and delicious food. Serving all day, they start off proceedings with breakfast before moving onto their daytime menu.
There is space to eat inside and outside. Kids will love the sand pit that is kitted out with buckets and spades. On summer days the Winking Prawn fires up the barbecue for al fresco dining and there is an evening menu to choose from too. We love their popcorn shrimp, crab sandwiches and fruit de mer!
How to get to North Sands in Salcombe:
Walk along Fore Street in Salcombe keeping the water on your left. Where the road forks, take the left hand road. Follow the road until you reach the Winking Prawn and North Sands Beach. This beautiful coastal walk will take 15-20 minutes.
Alternatively, you can drive the same route and park. Summer parking costs are £1 per hour or £6.50 for all day parking.
What will you find there:
- Beach with easy access down a concrete slope.
- Winking Prawn cafe/restaurant with a shop for beach items (buckets, spades etc.)
- One Prawnetto ice-cream van.
- Picnic area on the grass next to the car park.
- Dog friendly atmosphere with dogs allowed year round on North Sands.
