The Laughing Monk, Strete

This is Strete’s only restaurant, run by husband and wife team, Ben and Jackie who are passionate about food and love to use local ingredients wherever possible. They offer a personal approach to both their service and menus. Dine on salt and pepper Start Bay squid with Asian salad and sweet chilli dressing, pressed ham hock with celeriac and apple coleslaw and venison ragù with potato and herb gnocchi. Their sharing boards really hit the spot too with The Laughing Monks local seafood mixed grill with aioli and local Char-grilled rib-eye steak on the bone with hand cut chips, slow roast tomatoes, tarragon mayonnaise and salad – our advice, book early!

Start Bay Inn, Torcross

This traditional inn has been at the heart of life in Torcross, since the 14th century, formerly the Fisherman’s Arms and used by the local fishermen who worked their fishing boats from the beach opposite the pub. Today the pub is one of the most renowned in the area, famous for its mouthwatering fish and chips, seafood specialities and real and local ales. The patio on the prom is perfect for a pint and a crab salad.

For excellent fish and chips with a sea view head to The Torcross Boathouse. This independent family run licensed restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner during the summer months. With a menu of stonebaked pizzas, burgers and salads plus a great kid’s menu, it’s perfect for family dining. Relax on the patio for alfresco dining overlooking Slapton Ley or cosy up in front of the fire on the leather sofa with a glass of red when the chill sets in. Torcross Boathouse also offers a takeaway service for fish and chips on the beach.

Church House Inn, Stokenham

Head just over a mile inland from Torcross, towards the charming village of Stokenham and visit the Church House Inn. This popular pub puts a creative spin on classic pub dishes and showcases a menu of exciting vibrant dishes using the best local ingredients. 

The everchanging menu reflects the seasons and includes imaginative dishes such as smoked haddock arancini to start and venison, pancetta and mushroom suet pudding and beer battered fish and chips. They’re also very proud of their outdoor barbeque and feature a delicious daily grill menu as well as traditional Sunday roasts. The pub also has an entirely gruten free menu.
