We all know that Salcombe is an ideal holiday destination for families – all you need is a bucket and spade and enough change for an endless supply of ice cream and you’re away.

It’s also a no-brainer that Salcombe’s the perfect escape for couples – what could be more romantic than a walk along the coastline?

What’s sometimes forgotten is that there are very few things that beat a weekend away with your friends in this sandy little corner of the universe, whether it’s a special occasion, or just because.

So what exactly would you do with two days in the South Hams to relax and unwind, especially in the winter months?  Might we suggest the following?

Get up and surf

While winter weekends are usually good for a lie in, Devon is at its best when you are outside, especially with limited hours of daylight at this time of the year.  Yes it’s chilly out, but even so, few things are a better wake-up call than a dip in the sea.

So on that note, why not learn a new skill and get moving with an early surfing lesson at the Bantham Surfing Academy.  Yes, when you wake up in the morning you will wonder what on earth you have signed yourself up for, but by the time you have finished you will be buzzing with energy and absolutely ready for a second breakfast.

Beachhouse breakfast

Which leads us to our next suggestion – towel off, hop in the car and make the short drive to South Milton Sands for a breakfast with a view across the beach at the aptly named Beachhouse.

A personal recommendation would be to fill up on a doorstep bacon sandwich made with granary bread and large dollops of Brown Sauce accompanied by a mug of tea to warm up.  Nothing beats the feeling of a well-deserved breakfast.

Walking wonderland

We have said it time and again, nothing beats a walk along the coast in this neck of the woods, so after heading home for a shower it’s wellies on and back out for the afternoon.

There are numerous walks that are impossible to tire of, but for a circular route that always brings a smile hopping onto the ferry from Whitestrand (or The Ferry Inn if you are doing this in the summer) and pottering along the coast to Gara Rock for tea and cake is always a winning combination – just make sure you are back for the last ferry to Salcombe!

Dinner date

Food in Salcombe is always an important part of the experience.  The winter lends itself however to cozy evenings and hearty pub food, for which The Fortescue is fab.

There is always fresh fish on the menu, which is a must when you are in the area, and just in case you haven’t warmed up yet from all that outdoor exercise the fish pie is guaranteed to send you rolling home completely satisfied.
