A Magical Train Ride

From the moment the Coca Cola advert comes on the TV the holidays become associated with the idea of travelling somewhere magical. Perhaps your imagination will take you to the North Pole, maybe you will meet Santa’s elves, or you might even go somewhere really special – like South Devon, where we have our own particular brand of festive journey to take you on!

1. All aboard The Polar Express

At Christmas, the South Devon Railway introduces its very own Polar Express, where you can experience the magic of the 2004 film. Meet the conductor and crew as you head towards the North Pole where Father Christmas and his band of friendly elves join the train. 

2. Travel on the train of lights

Dartmouth Steam Railway also has plenty of magic in store, with their annual Christmas Train of Lights. The multi award-winning experience takes you on a very special journey in vintage carriages glowing with fairy lights, as you travel from Churston through the 450-metre Greenway tunnel that leads you to the enchanted forest, transformed by glowing displays. The show ends as you leave the forest only to be greeted by the twinkling lights of Dartmouth reflected on the river Dart.

Winter Wonderland

If the twinkling of the frost on Devon’s mesmerising countryside isn’t quite enough of a winter wonderland in itself, there are grottos and entertainment waiting across the South Hams to get you into the festive spirit – oh yes there is!

3. Woodlands Christmas Grotto

For kids of all ages, the Enchanting Christmas Grotto at Woodlands Family Theme Park will see merry elves and enchanting characters guide you closer to the heart of Christmas. Along the way, surprises await, from secret workshops to festive journeys, before you find yourself in the presence of Santa himself!

4. The Gruffalo’s Child Trail at Saltram House

For those who love a classic children’s tale, the National Trust’s Saltram House has turned its garden into a story brought to life, with The Gruffalo’s Child Trail. Step into the world of the Gruffalo’s Child and follow along on the journey through the deep dark wood with games, challenges and plenty of festive photo moments along the way. 

5. Panto in Plymouth

Christmas isn’t Christmas without a pantomime, and this year the stage is set at the Theatre Royal Plymouth for the fabulous Shane Richie to tell the tale of Dick Whittington as he seeks fame, fortune, and happiness journeying to become Lord Mayor. A classic tale packed with laugh-out-loud comedy, plenty of boos and hisses and lavish sets, it’s ideal for all ages.

The Christmas light tradition remains strong in South Devon’s towns and villages, with some stand-out favourites that you simply have to see to get you in the mood for the holidays.

6. Little lights at Babbacombe Model Village

Babbacombe Model Village is enchanting at any time, but this miniature world turns extra special with thousands of tiny lights at their famous annual illuminations. A little world of magic along with a special fire and lighting effects, it’s an outdoor experience that’s like no other.

7. Let it glow at RHS Rosemoor

Natural wonder meets the season of sparkle at RHS Garden Rosemoor, when it’s transformed into a world of festive lights and wonderment. Their unique light trail invites you to explore surprises and delights as you stroll along their illuminated route, complete with the chance to enjoy food and drink, and Christmas shopping for the ultimate festive evening out.

8. Mysterious magic at Agatha Christie’s Greenway

The famous author, Agatha Christie, had her beautiful home at Greenway in Dittisham, and each year they put on an inspired trail to explore and interact with. This year, it’s in full Christie style, with a family-friendly festive trail inspired by her short story collection, and its enigmatic character the Mysterious Mr Quinn. There’s puzzle solving, photo opportunities, and lots of mince pies – naturally.

Merry-making creativity

For those who want to get actively involved with the present making, gift-giving and crafty creations this Christmas, there’s plenty of artisan inspiration in South Devon where local creatives help you make the season everything you want it to be!

9. Wreath-making at Riverford

Riverford near Totnes are masters of celebrating all things natural, so it’s fitting that these organic heroes invite you to enjoy a wreath-making class with their very own Head Gardener, Penny Hemming. Make your own wreath, bursting with fragrant evergreens, Christmas tree offcuts, berried ivy, eucalyptus and sprigs of holly and red berries, while you tuck into mulled wine and Riverford mince pies. 

10. Winter workshops at Boringdon Hall

For those who want to enter into a world of medieval magic, a trip to Boringdon Hall is not only a chance to visit their spa and Michelin Star restaurant, but you can also join their Christmas Wreath Making Workshop in partnership with local award-winning florist, Hannah Burnett. You’ll learn how to make a wreath using festive florals and natural greenery, while tucking into mince pies, tea and coffee.

Whether you’re looking for last-minute shopping or the final flourishes to go under the tree, a Christmas market is the perfect place to find stocking fillers and embrace the spirit of the season, especially with lots of local crafts and artisan fare to enjoy.

Late Night Shopping in Totnes

Totnes’s tradition for a Christmas Market and late night shopping is in full swing again this year, inviting you to spend an evening at their annual family-friendly festive celebration. The town is alive with live music, street food and artisan crafts from 3pm to 9pm on Tuesdays 2nd, 9th and 16th December – don’t miss out! 

Shopping under the stars

Each year, Plymouth’s historic Royal William Yard transforms into a winter wonderland with festive markets, places to shop and socialise, and illuminations twinkling throughout the historic site. The Festive Good Food & Craft Market is a particular favourite for shopping under the stars on Wednesday evenings, with more than 60 stalls showcasing the South West’s best makers and their festive wares.

Artisan abundance in Exeter

Under the awe-inspiring backdrop of Exeter Cathedral, Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market is an iconic seasonal shopping event that’s bigger and brighter each year. Open from 10am on Thursday 20th November to 9pm onFriday 19th December, it brings festive cheer to all, with artisan craftsmanship and gourmet treats in abundance. Wander through twinkling chalets, savour seasonal delicacies, sip mulled wine beneath the spires, and shop from handpicked traders showcasing the very best of Devon and beyond.
