Tacket Wood House Overview

Tacket Wood House is a truly iconic Georgian property that has sat elegantly on the waterfront of the Salcombe-Kingsbridge estuary for two centuries. This stunning home offers a true taste of luxury with a unique blend of Swallows and Amazons adventure plus a dash of sunset tranquillity.

It is also an easy 10 minute walk into central Kingsbridge along public footpaths, where there is a cinema, many independent shops and restaurants and markets and a 5 minute walk to Kingsbridge Leisure Centre with its 25 metre main pool and separate learner pool.

The house was originally built in 1823 for the manager of a long disused slate quarry behind Tacket Wood, and is instantly recognisable by a huge Macrocarpa tree near the waterfront that can be seen in photographs dating back to 1882. Having recently undergone an extensive rebuild and sympathetic extension which was completed in 2022, the house blends all mod-cons with sumptuous interior design and generous proportions in every room.

The large entrance hallway leads to a vast open plan kitchen equipped with Susie Watson china and furniture together with top of the range Miele appliances. It includes an electric AGA, induction hob and double ovens with combi microwave. The bright dining area under a stunning roof lantern lends itself to happy breakfasts right through to long and sociable evening meals.

The smart drawing room with log burner and glorious views over the estuary is a perfect place for socialising in the evening, or a place to quietly read a book in the daytime. The captivating creekside views burst through the beautiful sash windows with original Georgian shutters.

Across the stair hallway you will find the second sitting room where a large TV and open fireplace provides total relaxation in the evening. The desk in front of the window is a wonderful spot for work as long as you are able to ignore the stunning floor to ceiling views over the garden and across the water through another tall sash window with original shutters.

The ground floor is also home to a shower room, utility area and pretty twin bedroom with its own Gothic door outside; perfect for those who prefer to avoid walking up stairs.

The original Georgian staircase up to the second floor reveals jaw-dropping bedrooms adorned with sumptuous Susie Watson fabrics, curvaceous headboards and Vi-Spring mattresses throughout. On the easterly side of the house there is a master bedroom (with en suite shower room) that opens out onto a private balcony with panoramic views stretching from the gardens and ever-changing waterway beyond, to meadows and copses to the west. Also on this side of the house is a twin bedroom and wonderful family bathroom. Take this opportunity to truly relax and enjoy a warm bath as you gaze out the window, soaking up the sights of the action on the Kingsbridge estuary.

Across the landing is a second twin bedroom, plus a large super kingsize bedroom with double aspect views and en suite shower room. From here you can have a cup of tea in bed whilst watching the sheep meander in the field across the lane – or count them at night if you’re having trouble sleeping!

Outside, the children will make the most of the gorgeous garden for hide and seek or even a teddybears picnic or maybe crab fishing off the private quay at high tide, or simply walk down to the private shingle beach to paddle and explore the foreshore at low tide.

When you’re ready for action, you can be picked up from across the estuary for a paddle boarding or kayaking lesson or even launch yourself off the beach. If you’ve your own boat, there are two private running mooring for smaller boats and dinghies, a sliding pole wall mooring for larger vessels, and a further tender mooring alongside a ladder on the sea wall which is accessible up to four hours either side of high tide. Salcombe, South Pool and the beaches are an easy half-tide boat ride away, avoiding all the traffic and crowds. Or at high tide, simply enjoy jumping off the wall into the sea for a very refreshing experience.

Included in your booking are 6 spa passes for the Salcombe Harbour Spa for use of their facilities which also entitles you to 20% off spa treatments and 10% off spa products (only valid for bookings up until 2nd July 2027, passes then expire)

This really is a truly wonderful home in a prime and unique waterfront location and picturesque setting. Book your stay in Tacket Wood House and prepare to be immersed in the beautiful land and seascapes of Kingsbridge.

Please Note:

At low tide the unfenced drop from the sea wall is 3m. Young children must be accompanied at all times.and off furniture.

Smoking not allowed inside.

Two well-behaved dogs who are at least 2 years old are allowed in the house subject to the owner’s discretion at an additional charge per dog. These must stay strictly downstairs and off furniture

Please note that a gardener will be working on Friday mornings and may need to attend at other times by prior arrangement. We are assured that no noisy machinery will be used while guests are in residence.

The running moorings are suitable for boats on unbraked trailers. The wall mooring can accommodate vessels like Ribeye A600s and Shrimper 19s Harbour dues must be arranged via the Salcombe Harbour Authority as usual. The wide Kingsbridge launching ramp is only 200m away as the crow flies, and Wills Marine (for example) can help with trailer storage as necessary.

We have spent another wonderful week at Tacket Wood House. This was our third time staying at this beautiful and very comfortable home. We feel really privileged to be able to stay here with our family, as it affords plenty of space, in such a lovely setting. We have been able to make the most of the house by inviting local family members for lunch in the superb garden. We have also appreciated being so close to Kingsbridge and Salcombe and being able to walk out of the door for country walks. We will definitely be back next year and will certainly rate Tacket Wood House 5/5 star.

This house is truly 5-star! Every detail felt curated, from the lovely bedrooms with incredibly comfy beds to the high-end luxurious bedding and toiletries. The kitchen was a highlight! Spacious, well-equipped, and filled with gorgeous mugs and crockery that made every meal feel special. We spent a lot of time in the amazing garden and even managed to kayak along the estuary right from the property. We were so lucky with the weather and were able to enjoy breakfast outside every morning. It was the perfect setting for a great weekend with friends—highly recommended!

We had a lovely stay in a fabulous house.Obviously the positioning was amazing and the grandchildren loved the crabbing at the end of the garden. The quality of furnishings, bedding, mattresses and house design was first class. So much love and time had gone into the property. We loved the kitchen particularly. We used to stay in the Crabshell Motel when I was a teenager and I often looked across the water and thought how lovely the house was.

Kingsbridge Travel

How to get to Kingsbridge Kingsbridge is a beautiful Devon town in a stunning location, sitting at the head of the Salcombe estuary (which is actually a ria). This charming market town is loved by locals and visitors alike – and it just keeps giving! Think independent local shops, great deli cafes, award-winning restaurants and the beautiful quay with its moorings, popular with stand-up paddleboarders. The town has regular monthly farmers’ markets, arts and crafts markets in the town hall and some newly-emerging antique shops. So, you’ve booked your luxury holiday home in Kingsbridge and are considering how to get there, here’s a quick rundown of Kingsbridge travel options. Flying to Kingsbridge Exeter and Bristol airports are the closest. You can fly into Exeter from Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Guernsey, Dublin, Belfast  City, Jersey, Isles of Scilly and numerous European cities. Pick up a hire car and drive to Kingsbridge, which is about 45 miles away. If you arrive at Bristol airport (108 miles from Kingsbridge) you can pick up a hire car or get the train from Bristol to Totnes, then hop in a taxi to Kingsbridge or even take the number 164 bus.   Driving to Kingsbridge Travelling from Wales, Midlands and the north, you can drive down to Exeter using the M5 motorway. From London, you can either come along the M4 and join the M5 at Bristol or take the M3/A303/A30 route and join the M5 at Exeter. The M5 converges into the A38 where you take the right-hand lane for Haldon Hill. Kingsbridge is easily accessed from this dual carriageway which links Plymouth and Exeter. Continue along the road with the slopes of Dartmoor on your right until you reach signs for Totnes and Kingsbridge, the slip road to your left takes you onto the A384. You don’t drive through Totnes town (but worth a visit during your stay), instead follow the A381 signposted for Dartmouth and Kingsbridge. The drive from Bristol will take around 2 hours and around 4.5 hours from London, depending on traffic.  Kingsbridge by train Totnes is just 13 miles from Kingsbridge and it’s the nearest railway station with regular trains running from London Paddington, the north, Wales and Birmingham. The journey time from Bristol is 2 hours and it’s a swift 3 hours from London Paddington.  On arriving at Totnes station you can pick up a taxi, the fare is around £25-35 and it’s about a 30-minute ride to Kingsbridge. Taxi numbers During busy times we recommend pre-booking your cab as the taxi rank at Totnes can get quite busy with travellers waiting for their onward journey.
