Salcombe Seafood
Salcombe sits in a unique position in the UK and our fishing fleet has access to some wonderful seafood. We are well-renowned for crab in particular (a must try whilst you are in the area) which is caught by Salcombe boats and brought straight into the quayside – surely the freshest and tastiest crab meat you’ll ever have?
Between January and March, a handful of boats are given licenses for scalloping along the Salcombe estuary. The Salcombe scallop is a sweet, succulent thing of beauty if you can get your hands on them! And locally we have oysters that are farmed in the perfect estuarine environment that forms the South Hams.
But did you know that crabs are nocturnal, hiding during the day, but foraging at night up to 50 metres from their hideouts? Did you know that the scallop is a mollusc and the only bivalve that can swim? Do you know your native oyster from your pacific? Find out more below!
