There are plenty of great things to do in Dartmouth, Devon. If you are wanting to unwind by the water, explore the countryside and immerse yourself in rich English history, why not consider a holiday in Dartmouth?

Why Choose A Dartmouth Holiday?

A Dartmouth holiday has something for everyone. The epitome of a traditional British break, it combines the guilty pleasures of a classic seaside resort with secluded natural beauty spots and captivating rural landscapes.

For fans of the water, there is no better place to holiday than Dartmouth. It offers a truly magnificent riverside retreat. The South Hams benefits from an unusually warm climate, making it the ideal destination for that UK getaway. Whether you are a foodie, a history buff or are in need of a romantic retreat for two, a short break in Dartmouth is a must.

Things To Do In Dartmouth, Devon

One of Dartmouth’s main attractions is Dart Harbour. This natural harbour is home to a whole host of things to do. From here you can hire sea kayaks and self-steer boats. You can personalise your own cruise with Dartmouth Boat Hire and visit smaller villages tucked on the banks of the Dart such as Dittisham and Tuckenhay.

If you don’t have sea legs and prefer seeing what Dartmouth and the surrounding area have to offer via land, take a trip on the Dartmouth Steam Railway. This 6.7-mile-long historic rail route links Paignton with Dartmouth and travels along the coast of Torbay.

Dartmouth is also home to some of the best National Trust in South Devon, a real treat for history lovers. Visit Agatha Christie’s Greenway house,  Little Dartmouth, and Coleton Fishacre with its tropical gardens. Greenway offers great views of Dartmouth and the others give lovely sea views.

If you are yearning for a beach day, Strete Gate beach is the ideal place to take a dip, take out a canoe or try your hand at windsurfing. Located just after Blackpool Sands and at the start of the coastal bar that stretches out to Torcross, Strete Gate is welcome to dogs all year round.

Things To Do Near Dartmouth

There is plenty to see and do around Dartmouth. Why not take a short trip to Salcombe? You can drive to Salcombe for a day trip in just over thirty minutes. Alternatively, you can opt for a longer, more scenic, coastal route.

Experience driving along the sand spit at Slapton Sands and see the striking Start Point Lighthouse on the top of the exposed peninsula in the distance. This short road trip could be a great way to conclude your Dartmouth holiday and take in some of South Devon’s magnificent coastline.

When on holiday in Dartmouth, you must visit the wonderful Brixham harbour. Brixham boasts one of the largest fishing fleets in the country and the harbour’s edge is really vibrant, with a variety of pubs and restaurants serving delightfully fresh fish. Brixham is a town that has thoroughly embraced its fishing port history and successfully combined tradition with modernity to create a fantastic place for both tourists and locals to enjoy.

Exploring the Dartmouth countryside

The countryside around Dartmouth is rich and tranquil. The River Dart flows peacefully through the town before it widens at Dartmouth Castle and joins the English Channel. If you are feeling adventurous, hire a boat and get out on the water.

Traverse up and down the river and see what wildlife you can spot. Grey and harbour seals have often been found playing in the Dart and lounging on the nearby beaches! You may even be lucky enough to see dolphins and porpoises dancing below the water.

For a more relaxed trip, take a riverboat cruise from Dartmouth up to Totnes. This takes ninety minutes each way and allows you to take in stunning panoramic views and spot some of Dartmouth’s main attractions, from the striking Britannia Royal Naval College buildings that dominate the landscape to Agatha Christie’s expansive Greenway estate.

Take the South West Coastal Path to Berry Head if you are in need of some fresh air and a walk. This route will take you over beautiful stretches of coastline where you can look out across the sea. If you want to stay in Dartmouth town and don’t fancy straying as far, you can take a stroll in Royal Avenue Gardens, complete with a bandstand and grassy lawns.
