Why should you choose a self catering cottage in Dartmouth?
1. Location, location, location
Considered one of the most beautiful in the UK, the South Devon coastline is simply stunning and easily accessed from historic Dartmouth. Stroll along the Embankment and watch the comings and goings on the river, glance across to the pretty pastel-coloured cottages which cling to the hillside in Kingswear. There are two ferries, the Upper and Lower ferries which operate throughout the year and are a great way to explore the other side of the Dart.
Dartmouth’s picturesque harbour takes you along the Embankment. Here you can appreciate views across the Dart, further along to the castle and out to sea. Glance towards the town and the winding streets of Dartmouth straddle the hillside, lined with pretty cottages. Towards the mouth of the river, you’ll see Dartmouth Castle to the right and its twin lookout guarding the other side. You’re never far from the beach when you choose a self catering holiday in Dartmouth. Check out our favourite beach spots.
2. Out on the water
You can’t stay in Dartmouth and not explore the River Dart and the beautiful coastline studded with beaches. Kiosks along the embankment in Dartmouth offer an abundance of watersport adventure including kayaking, stand up paddleboarding and canoes for hire. Prefer not to go under your own steam then try a guided trip or a more sedate ferry cruise up the river to Totnes or along the coast. If you’re looking for adventure, hop aboard one of the rib rides or a sea safari for a dolphin and seal spotting experience. Wild Swimming is growing in popularity and the River Dart and nearby beaches offer plenty of opportunities to indulge your passion for the sport. 3. Top dining
One of the main reasons guests (and locals) return to Dartmouth (apart from the stunning location, beaches, walks, watersports etc. etc.) is the food! Dartmouth is home to some of the best restaurants, cafes, delis and foodie outlets around, it’s not surprising it’s one of the top spots for cafe culture. Whether you’re looking for a la carte dining, fish and chips or a Devon cream tea, you’ll find it in Dartmouth.
In fact, the local chefs are so passionate about food that the town has an excellent outdoor food festival which is held annually at the end of October. With celebrity chefs; Mitch Tonks at The Seahorse and Ellie Wentworth, runner-up of MasterChef the Professionals 2016, now as Head Chef at The Angel, it’s little wonder that Dartmouth is becoming the go-to dining destination.
4. Excellent walks
The South West Coast Path runs through Dartmouth proving some excellent tracks and trails for walking, running and cycling. Part of the 630-mile path stretches from Minehead in Somerset to Poole Harbour in Dorset. The section of the coast path running along South Devon is challenging but equally rewarding as it dips down into secret coves and beaches. But you don’t have to cling to the coast, our advice is to explore the wooded valleys along the River Dart and lose yourself in the peace and tranquillity, away from the hustle and bustle of the town.
